This is the Life

I wish I could spend the rest of my life spinning poolside on the roofs of hotels in LA. Jealous.

One-A-Day

January 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

We were given an assignment in one of our classes, via Russell Davies’ blog. The idea is to do things to become more interesting. One such thing is to take pictures every day and share them.

I rarely use my digital camera. For one, it is a few years old. It’s a brick. I’m slightly embarrassed by it. The picture quality isn’t the best. However, I think this assignment is an opportunity to give my camera another chance. Perhaps I can learn some tricks to use the camera to its full potential. We’ll see.

The One-A-Day “experiment” is on my Flickr page and also on the right side of this page. The idea behind the pictures isn’t necessarily to capture the most exciting or unique moments. There will be some mundane pictures. I’m trying to show one frame of my day and share it with everyone.

Man Seeking Sandwich

January 21, 2008 · 4 Comments

Man, 24, seeks Cuban sandwich. Must be hot, delicious, and a bit spicy. Man has not found a decent Cuban sandwich in Richmond, and is looking for one to share a casual relationship with. If you know where this man can find such a sandwich, please comment. Thank you.

The Future of the Music Business?

From Gigwise:

New Coldplay Album To Be Sponsored?
by Jason Gregory
on 15/01/2008

EMI will allow its artists, who include Coldplay and Kylie Minogue, to be sponsored by corporate companies, according to reports.

The proposals, which could see Coldplay’s new album ‘Prospekt’ released with corporate branding, are expected to feature as part of an extensive shake-up of the company.

Terra Firma, EMI’s new owners, believe the plans would help increase the label’s revenue as it struggles to meet the growth of the digital marketplace.

Earlier Today, Guys Hands, the private equity firms boss, confirmed that up to 2,000 staff would lose their jobs at the record label.

The job cuts, which will focus mainly on the recorded artist division, are the equivalent to nearly one third of EMI’s entire workforce.

Terra Firma took over EMI last August in a deal worth £3.2 billion.

This is a long way away from coming to fruition, but I’m interested in seeing what happens. It would be disappointing to see record labels resorting to corporate branding of their artists’ releases because of their failure to adapt to the digital marketplace. Although if this is the future, why should bands even bother with record labels when they could cut the middle man and go to the corporations themselves?

The collective pants-shitting of record labels today is sad to watch. What they need to realize is they absolutely have to be more creative in the way they promote, package, and distribute their artists’ work. “Free ringtones!” and “bonus videos!” just don’t cut it.

As an added bonus, here are my sandwich shop power rankings:

…it would be the idea of calling Yuengling beers “Glingers”. Why? I say, “why not?” The next time you ask for a Yuengling, ask for a “Glinger” instead. Let’s make it happen.
